What AI can do for a small business today

AI can help draft messages, organise information and plan small everyday tasks.

Most small businesses in Kerala run on a phone and WhatsApp. The owner is also the writer, the accountant's helper, the customer-care desk and the planner. A shopkeeper's week with AI

Give AI one manageable task a day and keep local facts under your control.

Think of AI as a helper you give one small job a day. Monday: the catalogue message for the week's new items. Tuesday: reply to the two reviews that came in. Wednesday: the Onam stock list, category by category. Thursday: paste the scheme notice from the panchayat and ask what it wants. Friday: ask about a price — and then verify it with your supplier, because AI does not know today's local rate unless it searches. Saturday: the festival-week staff roster. Sunday: a short thank-you note to regular customers.

None of this needs a computer: seven short chats on a phone, in Malayalam if you like.

For farmers: ask AI, or ask a person?

Use AI for explanations, but ask a qualified local adviser before acting on crop treatment.

AI is a good first place to ask a plain-language question: what a term on a fertiliser bag means, why leaves might curl, what a scheme notice is asking for, how to write a request to the cooperative society. It is a poor place for anything with a number that could harm a crop, a wallet or a person.

Ask AI (then confirm): explain this word · what could cause this symptom · what questions should I ask the Krishi Bhavan · draft a letter · summarise this circular · what does this bank SMS mean.

Ask a person: pesticide or fertiliser doses · whether to spray at all · subsidy eligibility and amounts · crop insurance and calamity claims · loan and legal paperwork · today's market price.

Honest limits
