Why the question matters more than you think

A clear question gives the model useful direction instead of making it guess what you need.

In our last article you saw that a chatbot predicts likely text from whatever it is given. That has a direct consequence: the AI can only work with what you put in the question. If you say "PSC help", it has to guess which exam, which stage, how much time you have and what kind of help you want. It will guess something reasonable and generic, and you will be disappointed.

The fix is not clever tricks or secret words. It is the same thing you would do when asking a knowledgeable friend for help: tell them enough to help you. People call this prompting; a prompt is just the question or instruction you type. Good prompting is mostly good explaining.

One reassurance before we start: you do not have to write long questions every time. A short question is fine when you want a short answer. Engane.AI gives fuller answers where a question needs them, and when you ask for one word, one line or "just the answer", it gives exactly that.

You will not need all four every time, but when an answer disappoints, one of these is usually missing.

  1. Who you are (the situation). "I am a Plus Two student in Thrissur." "I run a small bakery in Kannur." "I am writing for my 70-year-old father." This changes the level, the examples and the tone.
  2. What you want (the task). Draft, explain, list, compare, summarise, translate, plan. Be concrete: "a study plan for four weeks", not "help with studies".
  3. The format. A table, five bullet points, a formal letter, two paragraphs, a step-by-step list, a menu. If you do not say, the AI chooses.
  4. The tone and language. Formal Malayalam for a school letter; casual for a WhatsApp message; simple words for an elder; English if the reader needs English. Say it in as many words as you like: "ഔപചാരികമായി", "സാധാരണ സംസാരഭാഷയിൽ", "very simple words".

Two extras that help with facts: ask it to show its reasoning ("step by step") when you need to follow the logic, and ask it to name its sources when the answer depends on current facts. Engane.AI lists the web sources it used under a reply when a search was involved.

Manglish works, and so does switching to English

You can ask in Malayalam, Manglish or English and specify the reply language.

Many people in Kerala type Malayalam in English letters because it is faster on a phone. You do not need to change that habit. Engane.AI understands Manglish ("nale mazha undo") as well as Malayalam script and English, and it replies in Malayalam.

The first answer is rarely the last one you need, and that is fine. Within a conversation the AI keeps the earlier messages in view, so you can steer:

You do not have to repeat the whole situation each time. For questions that need current facts, Engane.AI even searches a follow-up together with the question that set the topic, so "who are they?" after "who won the Kerala state film awards this year?" still searches the right thing.

A useful habit: when an answer is wrong or off-target, say what was wrong rather than only re-asking. "That plan assumes I am free in the mornings; I am not" gets you a better second draft than typing the original question again.

What not to put in a question

Good prompting also means knowing what to leave out.

  • Personal secrets. Never type passwords, OTPs, PINs, full card or account numbers, Aadhaar numbers or anyone else's private details. The AI does not need them to help you, and no legitimate task requires them.
  • Medical dosing questions. "How many tablets should my father take?" is a question for his doctor or pharmacist, not for an AI. Ask the AI to explain a term, to prepare questions for the doctor, or to build a reminder plan; leave diagnosis and dosage to a qualified professional. In an emergency call 108 or 112.
  • Decisions you would regret if the answer were wrong. Money transfers, legal deadlines, exam registrations. Use the AI to understand and prepare, then confirm with an official source before acting.
  • Anything you want kept out of your conversation history. Conversations are saved to your account so you can return to them; do not put things there that you would not want stored.

None of this makes AI less useful. It keeps the tool in its lane: explaining, drafting, planning and summarising, with the decisions staying with you.
